L2 Theme development in Discursive and Experimental undergraduate student writing

Abstract To complement earlier studies of writing development in the BAWE corpus successful student ( Nesi & Gardner 2012 ; Staples et al. 2016 ), we examine Systemic Functional Linguistics notion Theme as used by L2 writers across first- and third-year two distinctive discourse types: persuasive/argumentative Discursive assignments soft disciplines Experimental report hard sciences. analysis reveals more substantial differences types than between undergraduate writing. Textual Themes are consistently frequent interpersonal Themes, some variance is found within subcategories each. Significant lexical density occur where a predominance N+N topical also found.
